What To Do With Teens This Christmas

Doughnuts, crystal domes and jewellery delights: discover London’s latest highlights to engage those tricky teens in the run up to the Holidays.

With the festive lights twinkling and winter magic settling in, London becomes a playground for curious teenagers — full of atmosphere, sparkle and just the right amount of fun. From soaring skate-rinks beneath majestic heritage buildings to neon-lit rooftop igloos and dreamy light trails winding through botanical gardens, there are plenty of ways to satisfy even the most opinionated teen.

For a flavour of the season, we’ve got just the vibe that’s just right for older kids and teens who want something more grown-up than fairy-lights and elves. Whether they’re into skating, shopping, lights or just hanging out together, London this Christmas has enough sparkle and energy to surprise even the coolest teens.

1. For teens who love adventure

Parents will remember the popular 90s gameshow The Crystal Maze, but now there is a live immersive experience for the whole family. Groups of up to eight can test their mental and physical agility in the various zones to earn time in the crystal dome – it’s a brilliant bonding experience. Also great for teens and their friends is the popular Sixes Cricket. A virtual net with a simulated bowler, it’s fun even for those who have never picked up a bat. The venues across London have a lively atmosphere with great food too (a highlight is the Botham burger and truffle fries). For something more cultural, the Ghosts and Ghouls Family Tour at the Globe Theatre brings to life the most scary happenings of Shakespeare’s chilling plays, and is well worth a look.

2. For teens who love cool eateries

If you have not tried them already, doughnuts from artisan bakers Bread Ahead in Borough Market are a guaranteed hit with the teens. From the signature Crème Brûlée and Sea Salted Caramel to the chocolate-covered S’mores, you will see why they have such a cult following. There is also a doughnut masterclass workshop so you can make your own. Other artisanal favourites include Tokyo Bagel, a hidden gem in Waterloo, with its signature Jelly Bunny and matcha everything.
For something heartier, Wahaca, voted the UK’s most sustainable restaurant group, has a host of new launches for winter including the new Roast Ancho Mushroom Tacos and Corn, Bean & Feta Tostadas, while viral Californian eaterie Dave’s Hot Chicken has opened in Westfield. And if you are short of ideas, why not head to the many fresh food counters in the Harrods Food Halls, give your children a budget and let them choose – the rotisserie chicken and truffle mac ‘n’ cheese usually wins. And finally for a classic stop-off while shopping, The Mayfair Chippy has teamed up with pie kings Piemaster to make a Moo & Oyster pie, which will keep them more than satisfied.

3. For teens who love stye

Bubblegum by RF, the little sister brand from Roxanne First is currently the hot destination for colourful personalised jewellery – you can design your own necklace, accessories or charms with the playful resin letters and beads. For an equally colourful alternative for younger jewellery fans, the charm bar at Drm-Lnd Covent Garden is lots of fun, let them create bag charms, phone bracelets and everything to adorn hats and backpacks. Covent Garden is also great for the classic Subdued, Brandy Melville, Pixi shopping trail, but one to watch is the new Puma store opening on Oxford Street, followed by a trip to the brilliant Jellycat concession at Selfridges, where you can try the vending machine or order their speciality fish and chips. And finally, lose them for hours in Space NK’s recently opened flagship on Oxford Street, where there is every possible beauty trend.

4. For teens who love Christmas traditions

Why not head out of London to the wonderful Skate and Dine experience at Beaverbrook hotel in the Surrey Hills. Discover the outdoor ice rink in the grounds of the luxury country house hotel, and enjoy a festive sweet treat from the cabin, followed by a set menu at one of the many restaurants including Anglo-Italian dishes at The Garden House, British classics at Mrs.Beeton’s, or wood-fired favourites in the Pizzeria. Also a classic at this time of year is The Christmas at Kew light trail. It returns with dazzling new installations to make the most of dark winter evenings. Or why not finish a day out shopping and dining in the West End, with a glide round the brand new Skate at Leicester Square.
