Skincare From Santa: How The Arctic Circle Will Power Our 2026 Routines

It turns out Santa isn’t just leaving presents under your tree this year. The magic of his homeland is quietly shaping the future of skincare, too. Here’s our top pick of the best Arctic skincare products that are going to win your heart in the new year.

As the beauty industry looks ahead to 2026, formulators and brand founders are increasingly turning north for inspiration. Specifically to the Arctic Circle and its surrounding icy landscapes, where extreme conditions have given rise to some of the most resilient, potent natural ingredients on the planet.

Why are Arctic ingredients so exciting for skincare?

Plants that thrive in and around the Arctic Circle don’t have it easy. Long, harsh winters, low light and freezing temperatures force them to adapt and produce intensely protective compounds to survive. But, it is these very compounds – antioxidants, moisture-binding compounds, vitamins and barrier-strengthening lipids – that have also been shown to have an enormous benefit for our skin. In particular, they are adaptogens, which means they are natural substances that help the body manage stress, which in turn can help defend our complexions against environmental stressors, dryness and premature ageing, not just in the winter but all year round.

From Arctic algae to potent berries, these active ingredients are emerging as the next frontier in high-performance skincare, with leading brands such as Lumene and Forest Spa Finland offering plant-powered, science-backed formulas that can give you the softer, smoother skin you crave. Plus, these products tend to form pampering, self-care-aligned rituals too, which you’ll love to use when the weather outside looks less than friendly.

Best of all, the boom in Arctic-inspired skincare ties closely to broader trends in beauty, especially minimalist routines (perfect for frequent travellers who are constantly on the go) and ingredient transparency. Sustainability is also central to the Arctic appeal. With fragile ecosystems at stake, brands working with ingredients from this region are under pressure to source responsibly, invest in regenerative practices and collaborate with local communities. Traceability, ethical harvesting and ingredient-led storytelling are becoming non-negotiable, and that’s helping us as customers shop better too.

The Arctic ingredients to look for

Arctic berries

Arctic berries were among the first ingredients to ignite the Nordic skincare movement, and if there’s one to have firmly on your radar, it’s the cloudberry. This rare amber-hued fruit grows wild in Arctic marshlands and boasts up to four times more vitamin C than an orange. Alongside its impressive vitamin content, cloudberry is rich in omega fatty acids and antioxidants, making it a hero ingredient for dull, winter-worn skin. Cloudberry isn’t the only Arctic berry with skin-loving credentials, either. Lingonberry, sea buckthorn and crowberry are also prized for their high concentrations of vitamins C and E, polyphenols, and essential fatty acids. The result? A brighter, more even complexion with added protection against environmental stressors.

Arctic algae

Thriving in icy waters even with minimal sunlight, Arctic algae are masters of survival in harsh climates, and it is their specific ability to retain moisture and protect themselves from oxidative stress that brought the skincare gurus calling. This type of algae is especially good at producing polysaccharides and amino acids, which, when utilised in skincare, can translate into intense hydration, soothing benefits, and improved barrier function. That also makes the ingredient superb for sensitive, dehydrated, or reactive skin, offering comfort when your complexion feels compromised, including if you are off skiing soon.

Glacial water

Naturally filtered over thousands of years through layers of rock and ice, glacial water is exceptionally pure and mineral-rich, making it a great base for skincare formulations, which often contain an awful lot of water. (In fact, it is frequently top of the ingredient list). The inclusion of glacial water – over just plain ‘aqua’ – also tends to align with a brand’s desire to commit to sensitive skin-safe, uncomplicated skincare products, which is definitely no bad thing.

Birch sap

Long used in traditional Nordic remedies (before really gaining traction due to K-Beauty trends), birch sap is extracted from birch trees just before the leaves emerge, and it is an ingredient that is celebrated for supporting hydration at a cellular level (aka it provides a long-lasting moisture-boost), while also soothing dryness and sensitivity. That’s because it is particularly rich in minerals, amino acids, and natural sugars, which help reinforce your skin’s natural defences, especially during the colder seasons.

Forest Spa Finland

This is a glow-boosting facial bottled, says our beauty director, who fell in love with the serum after it helped perk up her rather tired-looking skin in the wake of a pretty nasty cold. Equally celebrated for calming down stressed and reactive complexions (which do rather come out of the woodwork at this time of year), it is powered by Arctic adaptogens like cloudberry, sea buckthorn, Siberian ginseng and birch sap, meaning it not only brightens dull skin, but strengthens your skin's barrier and defends against daily stressors like pollution and fatigue.

Lumene

Lumene is the Finnish brand that first brought cloudberries to the attention of many beauty experts in the UK, and if you have really dry skin right now, this serum packs an almighty punch. The signature Wild Arctic cloudberry is joined by a cocktail of vitamins C, B3 and B5, plus omega fatty acids and pure Arctic Spring Water to provide almost instant hydration, radiance and skin softer skin, all in just one lightweight-feeling product.

Skyn Iceland

Powered by botanicals that can survive even Iceland’s extreme climate, this youth-boosting serum demonstrates exactly why Arctic skincare excels; it's specifically designed to work with, not against, your skin to keep signs of ageing at bay. At its heart is astaxanthin, a potent antioxidant from Icelandic micro-algae that’s thousands of times more potent than vitamin C, but it doesn't stop there. It also contains cloudberry and cranberry seed oils, Icelandic glacial water, and zinc PCA, all of which help stop inflammation, irritation, dryness and dullness in its tracks.

Blue Lagoon Iceland

Inspired by the mineral‑rich waters of Iceland’s famous Blue Lagoon, this lightweight daily cream is the perfect example of nourishing winter skincare that doesn't have to weigh your complexion down. The award-winning formula is built around the brand’s BL+ Complex, a signature blend of patented Blue Lagoon microalgae and silica that helps stimulate collagen, strengthen the skin barrier and visibly smooth fine lines. It is also infused with electrolyte‑rich lagoon seawater, niacinamide, ceramides, hyaluronic acid, aloe vera and panthenol (aka lots of hero skincare actives!), to deeply hydrate without clogging your pores.

Woods Copenhagen

A lightweight plaster for winter-worn skin, this cream hydrates and soothes from multiple angles while being totally fuss-free – perfect if you tend to be a little low maintenance when it comes to your skincare. Inside the formula there's Arctic spring water, harvested from pristine Greenland sources, to instantly refresh; sea buckthorn oil to flood your skin with vitamins C and E; and Actibiome, a smart blend of algae and plant extracts, which helps calm redness, balance your skin’s microbiome, and strengthen its natural defenses.
