A Slow-Luxury Escape To Norway’s Fjordlands: Storfjord Hotel

There are places that leave you breathless, and then there are places that leave you still. Storfjord Hotel, tucked into the mossy hillsides above the Norwegian fjord it’s named after, does both.

We arrived in the afternoon – the sun hovering over the snow-capped Sunnmøre Alps, bathing the landscape in that silvery Nordic light. Storfjord isn’t the kind of hotel you stumble upon; it’s a destination for those who seek the spectacular. Here, the air smells like pine; adventure and relaxation in equal measures await.

A proud partner of 62° Nord, Norway’s premier curators of wild, cinematic experiences, you’ll remember your time at Storfjord long after your stay is over.

The Vibe

Upon entering the Stjorford Hotel, we were immediately enveloped in an atmosphere of elegance and warmth. The rooms reflect a modern Scandinavian aesthetic that harmonises with the breathtaking surroundings. Large windows frame views of the fjords and mountains, creating a serene environment, perfect for unwinding after a day of exploration. Thoughtful touches, such as locally crafted décor, sweet and savoury treats and cosy reading nooks, enhance the overall experience, making you feel at home in this picturesque setting.

Storfjord is a reminder that sometimes luxury is the warmth of a wool blanket after a fjord hike, the quiet hush of a forest at dawn, or the small, personalised touches with your meal. Whether it is indulging in exquisite culinary offering, embracing thrilling outdoor excursions or unwinding in the serene spa, you are sure to create lasting memories. All in all, the hotel captures the essence of Norway’s breath-taking landscapes and beauty so perfectly.

The Rooms

Our room resembled a private cabin in the woods – only far more considered. Timber walls, wool throws, and the kind of silence you only get when you’re truly remote. Through floor-to-ceiling windows, the fjord opened out like a painting. I spent hours curled up in the reading nook, with a book I never quite finished, because the view kept calling me back. Simply furnished, home comforts came first. Locally made treats were laid out for us on arrival and everything from the scent of the wooden walls to the oversized bathtub were a reminder that luxury can be both grounding and indulgent.

The Food + Drink

Dining at the Stjorford Hotel is a culinary adventure in itself and nothing short of exceptional. The hotel’s restaurant – helmed at the time I visited by the talented chef Nils Flatmark – offers a menu that celebrates the rich flavours of Norwegian cuisine with a passion for locally sourced ingredients. Chef Florian Harmish has recently taken over and shares the same philosophy: centred around authenticity, simplicity and natural ingredients. Menus change with the seasons and reflect availability of ingredients from local suppliers, allowing them to support local farmers and give guests a genuine taste of the region, but you can expect dishes such as locally caught halibut with oyster emulsion, cucumber sorbet, dill and tapioca crisp – and vegetarians are well catered for. Dinner was a slow, candlelit affair accompanied by local and international wines I’d never heard of and won’t forget.

The dining area, with floor-to-ceiling windows, creates an inviting atmosphere where you can savour your meal while looking out at one of the most breathtaking views in Europe. At breakfast, we lingered over sourdough pancakes, wild berry compote, freshly baked pastries, artisanal cheese and locally sourced seasonal fruit.

The Little Extras

The hotel has its own brand of honey which is a must try in your tea. You’ll also want to try the spa treatments which are grounded in nature. After a day spent in the wild outdoors, I opted for a Swedish massage using some incredible smelling oil made from locally sourced ingredients, followed by a nap in the relaxation room – though the startling views make it nearly impossible to fall asleep.

The To-Do List

If ever there was a place to embrace your inner Nordic explorer, this is it. A part of the 62° Nord collection, the hotel is a launchpad to the wilds: hike through enchanting forests to fjord-top viewpoints or boat across mirrored waters to a secluded fjord hamlet – each excursion curated, intimate, and quietly thrilling.

The essence of 62° Nord is to create something that someone will travel around the world for. To them that something is hospitality by exploration. And this they do very well.

One morning we hiked right to the top of a hidden plateau above the waterline, barely seeing a soul. At the top we enjoyed some hot tea before heading back down to the hotel. The perfect reward to ease aching legs is Storfjords two outdoor hot tubs on top of decking overlooking the towering mountains. Another unforgettable moment from our stay was a boat trip to the historic sister hotel Hotel Union Øye – a journey that felt like a scene from a Nordic fairytale as we sped through the water flanked either side by towering cliffs and cascading waterfalls.
