What To Wear In Tokyo

Tokyo was recently named one of the best cities to visit in the world, with record numbers of people gravitating towards its cuisine, cultural attractions and unique atmosphere. So what do you pack to ensure you assimilate without losing your own personal style? Aesthetics matter in Japan, and its street-style scene is among the very best, so here we’ve rounded up 15 items that will ensure that you always feel perfectly dressed. This is what to wear in Tokyo.

What you wear will, of course, be season dependent, but PLAY IT SAFE AND PACK A RAINCOAT (Mac In A Sac does the most compact). Whether you’re travelling in the summer or winter, LAYERS ARE USEFULUniqlo’s Heatteach range is perfect for the colder months, and a breathable, fine knit is useful when visiting shrines in the warmer season (covering up isn’t essential, but is seen as respectful). A PAIR OF SLIP-ONS are handy too as you’ll need to remove footwear when entering historical sites and temples (Fitflops are particularly comfy), and you’ll find locals use parasols to keep the sunshine off their skin (Uniqlo sells umbrellas that keep the rain away, but also offer UV protection). Tokyoites are a pulled-together, typically modestly dressed bunch, who prioritise quality and comfort over trends.

If you want to fit in, stick to oversized silhouettes or tailoring; a pair of barrel-leg trousers or combat trousers, teamed with a T-shirt and a padded jacket is an easy, versatile outfit. Just swap the T-shirt for a loose-fitting shirt in the evening. Colours tend to be muted, with a few bold accessories thrown in – a statement bag or shoe. Japan is known for its high-quality denim, so make sure you leave room in your suitcase for a new pair of jeans.
