The Conscious Citizen: CF's February Sustainable Edit

Welcome to The Conscious Citizen – CF’s monthly spotlight on the most inspiring sustainable collectives paving the way in mindful innovation and impact.

Including a London-based fashion brand committed to sustainability, an interiors brand inspired by The Cotswolds, and an iconic hotel in the Scottish Highlands, affectionately known as The Glorious Playground – these are a few of the names making a positive change this February.

FASHION

ALBARAY

Albaray works exclusively with trusted partners, prioritising long-standing relationships with suppliers who share the brand’s values. The brand’s commitment extends beyond the clothes too. Packaging is produced using responsibly sourced FSC-certified paper, with recycled and recyclable labels. Paperwork has been removed entirely from parcels, supported by a fully digital returns process in an effort to reduce waste. The windbreaker and slouchy straight-leg jeans in relaxed, everyday silhouettes are exactly what we’re manifesting in our spring wardrobe. For timeless, thoughtful pieces designed here in London by female founders, look no further.

INTERIORS

THE COTSWOLD COMPANY

For over 25 years, The Cotswold Company has created timeless furniture and homewares inspired by its namesake landscape, deep-rooted in honouring nature and a commitment to craftsmanship built to last. All timber used in their furniture is responsibly sourced and fully traceable, with more than 100,000 trees planted to date and an ongoing goal to plant more trees than are used, working alongside accredited partners such as Forest Carbon. Practical action underpins the promise: 97% of polystyrene has been removed from packaging, an action which has seen the brand achieve Zero Landfill accreditation from Beyondly. Achieving B Corp certification marks an important milestone and is further recognition of their priority to both people and the planet.

STAY

GLENEAGLES

One of Scotland’s most iconic destinations, Gleneagles is setting the benchmark for sustainability in luxury hospitality. Spanning two hotels, an 850-acre estate, three championship golf courses, and 11 bars and restaurants, the century-old estate marries old-school glamour with innovation. At the heart of this approach is a commitment to protecting the natural playground that surrounds the estate. Through partnerships with conservation experts and long-term tree-planting initiatives, Gleneagles is actively restoring biodiversity and nurturing wildlife habitats. In 2024, the estate committed to planting 3,000 native trees to provide year-round food sources for wildlife. These efforts are underpinned by robust environmental credentials, including Green Key certification for sustainable operations, Gold status in the Green Tourism scheme, and GEO Certification for the ecological management of its golf courses. Ambitious climate targets further underscore Gleneagles’ long-term vision, with a pledge to reach net-zero emissions by 2040. In recognition of this commitment, Gleneagles was awarded the AA Sustainable Award in September 2025, celebrating establishments taking measurable action to reduce environmental impact. Executive Chef Darron Bunn has expanded vegetarian and plant-based options across menus, while the latest menu at The American Bar, champions local artisan suppliers and ingredients sourced from Gleneagles’ own ecosystem – right down to the Breakfast Punch, which repurposes surplus pain au chocolat.

BEAUTY

NÉIA OIL

In just over a year, NÉIA has emerged as one of the UK’s fastest-growing perfume brands, founded on the belief that fragrance should feel both personal and planet-kind, NÉIA offers a modern alternative to mainstream perfumery. Its oil-based, alcohol-free formulas last up to 16 hours on the skin, delivering a cleaner, longer-lasting scent experience – without the needs for any harsh ingredients or inflated mark-ups.
Every element of the brand is thoughtfully considered, from vegan and cruelty-free formulations to minimal packaging designed to reduce waste and align with contemporary wellness values. That same care underpins their bestselling Discovery Set, which invites customers to explore six signature scents before committing to a full-size bottle – a considered approach to gifting that introduces the art of oil-based perfume and allows for layering and finding your own scent.

EAT

ROE

The little sister to Fallow, Roe in Canary Wharf is led by chef-owners Jack Croft and Will Murray, who first met while working at Dinner by Heston. The pair bonded over a shared passion for creating delicious food from kitchen by-products, such as fish heads, leek tops, and lemon peel, transforming what would otherwise be waste into staff meals and snacks. This mindset evolved into the team’s defining ethos: creative cooking, sustainable thinking. It’s the reason dishes such as Cod’s Head and the Chelsea Tart (made using otherwise discarded whey) are fixtures on the Fallow menu, and why the team continues to seek out overlooked ingredients and reimagine them as standout dishes. At Roe, the same principles apply. The menu features ex-dairy cow steaks and herbs grown on the restaurant’s own Living Wall, while the space itself reflects the brand’s forward-thinking ethos – featuring a 3D-printed wall constructed from plant-based biomaterials like fermented sugarcane, and lampshades derived from coral exoskeletons.
