If you’re one of those people who has mastered the dark art of travelling light, then you’ll already be familiar with the benefits of a travel backpack. So light, so compact, the utilitarian staple gives you your hands back. No longer will you find yourself trying to clasp your phone and coffee in one hand, and the carry-on handle in the other. Backpacks are very freeing. I know there are people out there who manage to travel only with a backpack and no further luggage. Regrettably, I am not one of them, so all I can do is to celebrate the backpack as a great carry-on alternative. Here, we share our favourites – designed to make your life easier.
Prada launched its cult Nylon Backpack in 1984, then seen as a BOLD MOVE in the luxury world. Today, it sits alongside countless other designer versions, from Burberry to Stella McCartney. It might not be altogether practical, but Simone Rocha’s bow and pearl-embellished is a true trophy, PERFECT FOR FASHION GIRLIES who want to step up their holiday look. There’s a lot of buzz around Barcelona-based brand Ölend, and its durable, playful backpacks, and also sustainably-minded label Troubadour, who specialise in light, but tough bags to travel or work in. Its award-winning Apex 4.0 style is a best-seller for a reason, a THOUGHTFULLY DESIGNED STYLE made from upcycled water bottles.
If you’re on a budget, then the great news is there’s lots of options. I love adidas’ leopard version, and Uniqlo’s nylon sporty number has Prada energy. Topshop, who relaunched last year, also do a good black classic that you’ll use at home and on holiday. Streamlined silhouettes and anything in leather will bring a sense of polish.
