The Suite Spot for Families in Crete: Inside Domes of Elounda

Welcome to Domes of Elounda, where Mediterranean luxury meets family-friendly hospitality on the dazzling northeastern coast of Crete.

With an Ofsted-registered crèche, an open-air village within the resort bustling with nightlife and exciting gastronomy and a Vilbrequin beach club, the 5* property ticks the boxes for a sophisticated family getaway. Just one hour from Heraklion airport, this luxury hideaway rises up from a private beach on an exclusive hilltop overlooking UNESCO protected Spinalonga Island. It’s not surprising families return here year after year.

The Vibe

The moment you step from the geometric tiles at reception onto one of the fleet of golf buggies which zip around resort, you’ll realise Domes of Elounda isn’t your average Cretan hotel. Spread across a vast hillside setting overlooking the historical Spinalonga Island (made famous by Victoria Hislop’s bestselling novel The Island), this architectural stunner comprises of 78 suites, 28 luxury residences, eight private residences, and four ultra-luxe villas. Each dwelling has the same signature domed structure crafted from honey-coloured stone excavated during construction. This is Greek village life, but reimagined through a luxury lens. There are olive groves, an outdoor amphitheater, and Mediterranean gardens leading down to a private beach on the calm Gulf of Elounda. But this isn’t any beach, this is Vilebrequin La Plage, a collaboration with the French swimwear brand. You’ll find their signature Riviera chic in the pastel towels, stripy cabanas and a Provencal fusion menu served on bright hand-painted ceramics. It is this injection of cosmopolitanism which elevates Domes of Elounda from other resorts on the island.

Families will want to be based near CORE – a vibrant open-air complex where modern pop-up shopping meets street food dining and nightly live entertainment. It is also home to the family pool, eco-playground, and the exceptional kids club. Once the kids are dropped off, grown-ups can retreat to the new adults-only wing opening the 2026 season. Chora is dubbed a ‘secluded oasis’ with panoramic views over the Spinalonga inlet, a tranquil swimming pool and Italian restaurant for lazy (grown up) lunches. It was peak season when we visited but staff here really do try to go that extra mile, and you can rest assured that no one is going to roll their eyes if your child throws a tantrum. The atmosphere is laidback luxury that doesn’t take itself too seriously.

The Rooms

With accommodation spanning from elegant suites to four-bedroom villas, there’s something for every family size and budget. All rooms feature that modern Mediterranean aesthetic: beige and black palettes, hand-picked local pottery, geometric wall details, and traditional woven basket art. Floor-to-ceiling windows flood spaces with the glorious Greek light, whilst mod-cons like Coco-Mat mattresses ensure total comfort. Storage is ample for all your family beach gear and they will provide any baby items on request. Bathroom shelves are well-stocked for little ones with natural Greek skincare brand Korres, baby bath bombs and mini robes.

For families, the One-Bedroom Family Suites with private pools in the CORE complex are ideal. At 100m², these beautifully spacious retreats give you a king-sized bedroom and a separate living area with sofa beds. Some rooms only have walk-in showers, so do request a bath if this matters. The real showstopper is the private terrace with your own heated outdoor Jacuzzi or small pool, and views stretching across Elounda bay or the CORE complex.

The Luxury Residences and Private Residences (200m²+) come with multiple bedrooms, large private pools and yes, even gold taps!  If you can push the budget, they are brilliant for families equipped with your own microwave, washing machines and outdoor dining areas. These top-tier options automatically unlock the Haute Living benefits which includes a dedicated villa manager (who can also help with heating baby bottles) and access to the Haute Living Room where you can indulge in unlimited drinks and snacks – vital for any parent!

The Food + Drink

With four signature restaurants and multiple bars, dining at Domes of Elounda wonderfully accommodates both sophisticated palates and fussier young eaters.

Start your day at Tholos –  the buffet restaurant which looks like a cool brunch spot – where teeny tiny waffles and pancakes will delight little ones along with the giant orange juicing station. Highchairs are plentiful and a lot of the buffet is thoughtfully positioned at kid’s eye level which is handy for older ones who want to pick their own plates.

For lunch, there’s poke bowls, Greek salads and tasty chicken Gyros wraps at the pool but do look out for the special sushi and DJ days at the beach bar for something more exciting (there isn’t an app, but plenty of info around the resort). Our favourite way to fill the afternoon though, was sipping a glass of Cretan wine and savouring seafood with sand in our toes and a view of the sea at Vilebrequin La Plage beach restaurant. Along with ice-cold oysters and the catch of the day, there’s chargrilled octopus on creamy polenta, fresh squid with bacon gnocchi finished with golden Tarte Tropézienne.

As the sun dips down, the outdoor CORE complex comes alive with nightly activities for kids (we saw an amazing bubble show and stilt walkers), art exhibitions, cinema screenings and entertainment for the adults. Take a table and then order from the street food trucks which serve everything from wood-fired pizza to Greek BBQ. With pop-ups showcasing exciting guest chefs and international evenings combining modern menus with live music, this really is a 360 dining experience with a buzzy vibe. Most importantly, kids can run, dance and explore whilst you dine.

If you prefer a more traditional dining experience, Blend restaurant grills up steaks from the hotel’s own butchery served with tomatoes and greens plucked from the organic garden. The real star is Makris Elounda, the acclaimed fine dining restaurant with panoramic sea views. This is where you’ll want to book a babysitter for a romantic evening – the progressive Greek cuisine is exceptional, featuring bold flavours and innovative techniques. Follow it with a nightcap at The Grand Domes Bar with a postcard view overlooking Spinalonga.

The half board package allows dining at the buffet restaurant (with a credit towards other restaurants and some extra supplements). The Dine Around option offers more flexibility but it might be worth upgrading to a Haute Living package if you drink more!

The Child’s Play

Let’s talk about what makes Domes of Elounda exceptional for families: the childcare. This isn’t some afterthought crèche tucked in a corner; it’s a thoughtfully designed, 1,000-square-metre wonderland that works to Ofsted standards and Montessori principles.

For babies and toddlers (4 months to 4 years), the Domes Crèche operates two sessions daily: 10am-1pm and 3pm-6pm, with qualified multilingual carers providing attentive care in a bright, engaging environment stocked with soft and sensory toys. There’s an additional fee for crèche use and do book early.

The complimentary KiEPOS Kids Club (for ages 4-12)  is named after the Greek word for garden. A few slots a week are dedicated to eco-conscious learning through play, with children exploring the eco playground and the resort’s organic garden, planting herbs and vegetables. Alongside the usual arts, craft and sports, other activities during our stay included fashion design, volcano making, chopping healthy snacks and even a mini spa day! At night, the team lead face painting, cinema nights with popcorn, karaoke and evening discos where you can drop off or stay with the kids.

Football, tennis, and sailing academies offer proper coaching for sporty kids but there are also occasional complimentary special activities at the tennis courts including rollerblading and an Angry Bird themed challenge. For teens and tweens (13-17), the separate entertainment centre is the spot to hang: arcade games, VR experiences, PS4, Xbox, table football, ping pong, a projection room for movies, and a chill-out lounge. Nannies are available for hire if you want dedicated one-on-one care. Every member of the childcare team we met were all super friendly and engaging with the kids.

The To Do List

Beyond the kids’ club, Domes of Elounda offers endless activities for the whole family. There are baby and family pools and an adults-only infinity pool, but it’s the private beach which is the real draw. With shady pine trees and shallow waters, it is ideal for younger children learning to swim and spot fish. Water sports await on the beach: paddleboarding, sailing, windsurfing, and snorkeling (equipment provided) or take the hotel’s private speedboat, Meraki, to explore Spinalonga Island. The trip takes less than an hour which is just right for young kids.

Fitness enthusiasts will appreciate both indoor and outdoor gyms with state-of-the-art equipment, plus complimentary classes including sunrise yoga on the beach and Reformer Pilates in a beautiful botanical garden setting. There is a tennis court which is free to use, or set off on the resort’s running route through pine and olive groves.

The Soma Spa offers blissful treatments using local Cretan herbs alongside premium brands like ELEMIS and tech such as light therapy masks. The treatments range from tranquil CBD massages to clinical grade ‘red carpet’ facials. Follow with a honey tea on a heated lounger in the Tepidarium, and obligatory steam, sauna and ‘adventure’ shower. There’s even a Fairytale Kid’s Spa menu with Miss Mermaid and Superhero mini massages from €70.

With an on-site grocers stocking essentials like nappies, wipes, formula, magazines, and beach toys, you need never leave resort. By day, there’s also a gorgeous beach boutique, Neema Plage, with rails of designer beachwear and at night, you can browse the pop-up stands at Core showcasing local artisans and curated lifestyle and fashion products.

However if you’re craving culture, pop by the nearby fishing village of Elounda with its waterfront tavernas and pretty souvenirs, or drive 25 minutes south to Agios Nikolaos with its legendary bottomless lake supposedly bathed in by goddesses Athena and Artemis. The ancient Minoan palace of Knossos (birthplace of Western civilisation) is easily accessible for history-loving families, as are scuba diving expeditions to explore the sunken ruins of ancient Olous beneath the waves.
