When it comes to choosing where to spend your first night as newlyweds, every detail matters. After a day of celebration, our writer Emma Zacharia retreated to 11 Cadogan Gardens for an evening of quiet glamour and respite.
We knew that after all the hubbub and bleary-eyed joy of celebrating with our favourite people, we’d want to slink off somewhere quiet and convenient. Our perfect hotel would have to feel special, private and somewhat cocooning. It would also need to be close to our wedding reception in Chelsea.
Enter 11 Cadogan Gardens. Behind a red-brick Victorian façade overlooking one of Chelsea’s prettiest garden squares, 11 Cadogan Gardens is a late 19th-century townhouse hotel, built by the 5th Earl Cadogan. This Relais & Châteaux property was originally four separate homes, now stitched together into a discreet, characterful retreat. Despite being just moments from the bustle of King’s Road and Pavilion Road, the atmosphere inside is a respite from the city. You’re close to everything you could possibly need, and yet, somehow, there is still a sense of peace.
The Vibe
Staying here feels like staying in a beautifully kept private house, rather than a hotel. Perhaps this was due, in part, to the view from our bedroom, a Junior Suite high up on the top floor, which overlooked some of the finest residential houses in Victorian Chelsea.
Arriving late at night, still giddy and dazed from the day, we were quietly welcomed to our beautiful room with champagne and flowers, delicious fudgy chocolate brownies, and rose petals scattered across our bedsheets. Art portraits line the stairs amid a palette of rich plum, gold and burgundy. It’s romantic and cosy without being theatrical. Though the style is polished and grown up, it feels elegant rather than formal. After the intensity of a wedding day, it was the perfect place to exhale.
Our interactions with staff were minimal (sleep and food being the priorities) but the team on-site were calm, warm and capable. They were unfazed when we dropped our honeymoon suitcases off the day before, and were equally accommodating when helping us slip away in the rain at 5am for somewhere more sunny.Â
The Rooms
Our Junior Suite, overlooking Cadogan Gardens and its neat rows of red-brick Victorian houses, was light, spacious and beautifully proportioned. The room felt airy and chic – it was the kind of place that makes you happy to spend an entire day doing very little at all. The bed was as indulgent as we’d hoped; deeply comfortable, with luxuriously soft beds sheets that made climbing out of it the next morning feel borderline unreasonable.Â
For couples wanting to mark the occasion with full-on opulence, the Sloane Suite is the standout. Located on the first floor, it’s furnished with antiques and flooded with light from the bay windows that overlook the gardens. A gold, cream and black colour scheme sweeps through the living and dining areas, while large double doors reveal a super-king four-poster bed beyond. For weddings with family or friends staying nearby, the suite can also interconnect to create an expansive three-bedroom townhouse.
The Food + Drink
The morning after our wedding, breakfast in bed was essential. Ravenous (and definitely still hungover) we both ordered the full English, accompanied by fresh juices, ginger shots and excellent coffee. Hot and with generously sized plates, it tied us over until we ventured out to the cafes that line Pavilion Road. After all the wedding fun, we opted to eat in (kind of) at the hotel’s restaurant, Hans’ Bar & Grill. The beauty of this restaurant is that it’s a fully-fledged dining spot – whether you’re a hotel guest or not. With one entrance inside the hotel and the other leading out onto Pavilion Road, it’s as much a destination in its own right for hungry Londoners and city visitors as it is for hotel guests. Expect British classics done properly in a relaxed, unpretentious and cosy atmosphere.Â
The Little Extras
The private garden square is a rarity in London, and a wonderful perk to any central London stay. In fact, for a boutique property with just 56 bedrooms, the sense of space and privacy is impressive across the hotel. More than anything, it provided the ideal backdrop for such a special moment. We had space and privacy to be together, while everything we needed was reassuringly close by.Â
The To-Do List
You have the whole of London to explore from here, and it’s only a 20-minute walk to nearby galleries, including the Natural History Museum and the V&A. But the beauty of staying right here, in the heart of Chelsea, is that if (like us) you don’t really fancy moving far from base, then Pavilion Road is right on your doorstep. Full of artisan cafes and small boutique stores, it’s ideal for a gentle, sunlit stroll. King’s Road is right next door too, and, for me, was the perfect place to pick up some last-minute honeymoon-packing pieces.Â
All that said, there’s something rather lovely about letting the city wait and instead making the most of the hotel by ordering another coffee, closing the curtains, and staying exactly where you are.
