Citizen Femme Hotlist: 19.10.20

Staying in or heading out? Either way, our edit ensures all eventualities are approached with style and elegance.

In this week’s Citizen Femme Hotlist, we explore the homes, tastes, and lifestyles of brilliant creatives around the world and workout a formula for easing up, winding down, and falling asleep. Plus, we report on the much-discussed Rebecca remake starring Lily James and Armie Hammer.

RELAX WITH THIS Kalmar, Calm Collection

Perfect after a crazy day, Kalmar’s calm collection is our go-to, end-of-day wind down. Designed to realign the mind, body, and soul, this trio of shower cream, body cream and a calming scented candle is a tool kit for chilling out. We’ve got into the habit of a bath before bedtime of late (reverting to our six-year-old selves feels comforting) and are using Kalmar’s Calm Deep Cocoon Shower Cream to kick things off on exiting the tub.

Next, we’re turning our attention to the Calm Soothing Body Cream (breathe in that evocative fragrance – we swear we were transported to a Provençal garden for a millisecond – before striking a match and letting the zen times commence as our Calm scented candle enflames. Ease up, wind down, and fall asleep (making sure to blow that candle out first, ofc).

READ THIS More Than Just a House

Out Tuesday, More Than Just a House, is the must-anticipated lifestyle compendium curated by creative director Alex Eagle. Convincing an exceptional group of cool and creative contemporaries to open their doors to interiors enthusiasts, readers can explore and survey the design worlds of Sarah Harris, Margherita Missoni, Rosetta Getty and other notable names from the worlds of fashion and design. Flipping through the pages, we paused on Alex Eagle’s light-filled loft in London’s Soho – a show house for the objects, vintage furniture, and art she deals in at her boutique, where natural materials, rare books, original art, and vintage furniture create the warmth and personality of a well-lived home.

Warning: this is a tome of sheer and utter temptation and inspiration.

WATCH THIS Rebecca

Based on Daphne du Maurier’s beloved 1938 gothic novel, the story of Rebecca follows a whirlwind romance in Monte Carlo between young newlywed (Lily James) (a woman of modest origins) and handsome widower, Maxim de Winter’s (Armie Hammer). Returning to Winter’s imposing family estate on a windswept English coast, the new Mrs de Winter must contend with her husband’s sinister housekeeper Mrs. Danvers (Kristin Scott Thomas) and the haunting shadow of his late wife, the elegant and urbane Rebecca. Cue drama, deceit and full 30s glamour, courtesy of costume designer Julian Day.

SHOP THIS Chanel Flats

Blame Brigitte Bardot for the £600 you are about to drop. Her pirouetting and promenading in ballet pumps from her And God Created Woman days have made for a life-long love affair with ballet flats. Synonymous with easy elegance, Chanel’s ballerinas (conceived by Karl Lagerfeld in 1984 – an extension of Gabrielle Coco Chanel’s signature two-tone sling-backs), are now an iconic fashion accessory.

Not exclusive to the feet of Francophiles, these ladylike slip-ons are rising the ranks on the wish lists of CF contributors from Miami Beach to Marylebone. With party heels now redundant, a party pump (we love this fantasy goat and grosgrain colourway combo) is the perfect outfit lift for nights in.

BOOK THIS Mo Diner

Algerian restaurateur Mourad Mazouz (of Sketch and Momo acclaim) has added another eatery to his clan. A spin on the retro 30s diner, Mo Diner blends traditional Los Angeles diner culture with a menu of moreish Mediterranean dishes. Under the helm of Michelin-starred chef Éric Chavot, an all-day menu kicks off from noon. Our order: duck confit with pomegranate and shallots, followed by an alcoholic hard shake (to substitute desert… maybe).

The interiors are just as delectable – the ceiling is covered with palm tree-lined light boxes and canary yellow Moroccan tiling is paved under foot. Still, the greatest novelty at Mo Diner is the bill (yes, really) which comes with a ‘Mo Lotto’ scratch card. If you win, you’ll walk out leaving the bill unpaid.
