Suitcase Series: Susan Corsini

Susan Corsini is the founder of London-based fashion brand, Mondo Corsini, offering timeless clothing that is made to last.

Her elegant and simple designs commit to a relaxed state of mind and champion a ‘buy less, buy better’ philosophy, with considered natural and breathable fabrics, such as cottons and linens, the basis of her versatile designs.

An Australian living in London and married to an Italian, travel is a big inspiration for Susan, who often spends her time away trawling artisan markets for antiques and hidden treasures.

Here, we delve into Susan’s travel psyche and she tells us about her favourite hotel in Italy, her most memorable trip, and what her dream getaway looks like.

What is the first trip you remember taking?

My first vivid memory was of a trip from Perth in Australia to England, to visit my grandparents when I was around seven years old. England just felt so far away. Naturally, I carried my stuffed toy wombat the entire way, it was about the same size as me.

What’s been your most memorable trip and why?

Travelling through Rajasthan with a female friend in my early 30s. I remember it vividly as it was one of my first visits to India, a country that I still find so inspiring today. When planning our trip, we had seen a marvellous Abercrombie & Kent itinerary through the region, so we chose to stay in a few of the same places. The trip came at the most perfect time in my life, and it was such a welcome moment for me to be transported to this incredible place. Just a brilliant memory.

Where or what is your escape?

Travelling has always been my greatest escape.

What’s the biggest lesson you’ve taken from your travels?

To always try to stay open-minded and curious. To leave a little room in the itinerary to just go exploring. That’s where I find the great discoveries happen – on my travels, and in life in general.

If I could go anywhere tomorrow I’d go to:

A cruise down the Nile!

How would you spend your ideal afternoon in your home city?

I grew up in Perth, Australia, so I’d take a walk along Cottesloe beach with a friend, have a swim and grab a coffee, then meet family and friends and settle in to watch the sunset and enjoy a meal together.

What’s your idea of a luxury holiday?

Somewhere that makes you feel well taken care of, where all the small details are considered. And somewhere you get to have a break from the demands of normal life to explore somewhere new, rest, and connect with loved ones.

Where do you get your holiday inspiration?

Films, books, and chatting with friends who have been to interesting places.

How do you recover from jet lag?

Exposure to natural light at the right times of the day, magnesium, and a lot of water.

What’s your in-flight beauty routine?

Just drinking water and using moisturiser regularly.

Your flight’s delayed an hour and your phone’s out of battery. How do you pass the time?

Looking for a phone charger?

Favourite hotel?

Podere La Strega in Siena, Italy. A charming family-run hotel overlooking Siena that happens to be run by my mother-in-law. If I’m there, it usually means I’m amongst family and friends – and eating really well as she is an incredible cook.

Favourite airline?

Qantas, for the wonderful advertisements that fill me with nostalgia and their outstanding safety record. Also, if I’m on a Qantas flight I’m usually heading to Australia.

What’s on your travel playlist?

Fleetwood Mac and 90s hip hop.

What are your must-have travel picks?

Sunglasses, always oversized, and normally Celine. A straw hat – Lola Hats, from New York, are producing some of my current favourites. A very versatile linen dress, such as our Victorine dress in super-soft white linen. A Smythson diary, I love their Soho diaries for planning and obsessive list-making and note taking. An oversized raffia basket, like our Kapity baskets in natural raffia, for the commute and the destination. Obagi moisturisers.
