Is This The Most Stylish Spot In The Cotswolds?

It’s always great to escape to the country for a weekend away, and the newly-opened Bell at Charlbury is the perfect place to do so.

This beautifully-restored, 17th-century coaching inn is the epitome of rural-chic with stunning rooms and a delicious menu to be found in its cosy pub. The latest offering from Daylesford Stays, The Bell has been an instant hit and Citizen Femme couldn’t wait to check in and find out more about one of the most stylish spots in the Cotswolds.

The Vibe

Laidback and effortlessly cool, the Bell in Charlbury has all the charm you’d expect from a cosy Cotswolds pub with rooms, but it also has a stylish air, attracting Londoners who want to escape to the countryside for a quintessential weekend away. The latest offering from Daylesfords Stays, this 17th-century building has all the same hallmarks as the other properties in their upscale portfolio of hotels and self-catering accommodation. The classic Cotswolds stone, rustic yet warm interiors, and tasteful, on-trend accessories create a winning formula for those who want to experience the Cotswolds at its most chic. After a six-month renovation project, the Bell opened its doors in late September 2023 and has since become one of the destinations for both the London crowd and locals alike.

The Food + Drink

The modern British menu is full of the kind of hearty grub you’d expect from a countryside pub. The likes of fish pie, beef suet pudding, plus apple and plum crumble are made with wonderfully fresh local produce, much of which comes from the nearby Daylesford Organic farm. Sunday lunch is a traditional affair with all the trimmings, and there is also a super kids’ menu. The wine list has been carefully hand-picked from independent vineyards, while craft beers from small British breweries are served alongside traditional cask ales, giving the bar the feel of a true rural inn. The restaurant itself is a series of cosy rooms that are a mix of oak wood and creamy exposed stone. Settle down at one of the simple wooden tables, or tuck yourself away in a snug nook while you eat by a roaring fire. An ideal place to sink into, once you’ve kicked off your wellies after a long countryside walk.

Breakfast is a wonderful à la cart choice of fruits, toast, muesli and eggs, or if you prefer, the classic full English complete with black pudding and mushrooms. Importantly, this is not a place of style over substance: the same amount of detail goes into what’s on your plate as it does the pretty setting. Adding to the dining options, the newly renovated Barn will open later this month: a 40-cover open-plan restaurant adjacent to the pub, designed with gatherings in mind. The perfect setting for a special occasion.

The Rooms

There are four categories of room: cosy, classic, spacious and family. The only thing that really differentiates them is size, as they move from small rooms perfect for couples, to much larger suites that can accommodate parents and two children. In some you’ll find four-poster beds made from local, reclaimed wood, while others have pretty upholstered headboards. All are very well appointed and beautifully furnished with colour pallets a mix of off-white and cream alongside bolder hues of indigo, ochre and oxblood. Floral embroidery and hand-blocked prints add accents on upholstery, cushions and curtains, while lamps and accessories sit on antique bedside tables. Ensuites are home to roll top baths, separate showers and vanity units packed with divine-smelling Bamford toiletries and fluffy white towels.

The Little Extras

Carol Bamford is the creative force behind Daylesford Stays and it’s clear to see her exquisite eye for detail in every aspect of The Bell’s design. While this may be a country pub, the rooms are more akin to those of a five-star hotel. Warm and inviting, it’s a masterclass in comfortable yet chic design that will leave you longing to recreate a similar look in your own home. A renowned hostess, Bamford has thought of everything for the Bell’s guests – from the superb selection of Daylesford teas sitting alongside the kettle and fresh milk in your room, to complimentary transfers to and from Charlbury rail station in the Bell’s electric Land Rover Defender.

The To Do List

The stunning Cotswolds offers up plenty of opportunity for walks through rolling fields, such as those of the 1,700-acre Cornbury Park Estate, venue of the annual Wilderness Festival. Charlbury itself is a charming little village with pretty shops and plenty of country lanes, each lined with picture-perfect Cotswold stone cottages to wander down. But, if you love the aesthetic at the Bell, then top of your to-do list must be a visit to Daylesford Farm. Just 20 minutes away by car, it’s a mecca for glossy, organic living. With a farm shop selling the most delightful products – from cakes and cheese to wine and meats – this gorgeous location is a super place to while away a few hours. Here, you’ll also find great cafés and a restaurant, swish homeware and clothing stores, plus the lush Bamford Wellness Spa with its long list of relaxing and rejuvenating treatments. And the best bit? If you are staying at the Bell you’ll get a 10% discount on spa bookings. Yet another reason to book a stay at this fabulous spot.
