The Beauty Haul Diaries: Trish McEvoy

There’s nobody better to preach the virtues of beauty organisation on your travels than Trish McEvoy. Pre-cleaned brushes, included.

The US-based CEO and make-up artist is all about streamlining your beauty haul. And with her expertise spanning four decades in the industry, we are all ears. One of the sell-out lines in her namesake brand is the Makeup Planner – a customisable cosmetics organiser that she designed to put a stop to make-up disorder.

“Before I designed the Makeup Planner, I was on vacation with my husband and my products were sprawled across the counter and he said ‘there must be a better way’…,” says Trish. “I always suggest only having the pieces you are really going to use when travelling – and bring multi-functional products.”

From decanting bathroom staples, to dry sheet masks, this is how Trish McEvoy does travel beauty – the organised way.

What are your must-do beauty rituals or treatments before you travel?

I always decant my skincare routine into refillable travel sizes so that my skincare doesn’t take up a lot of space and I don’t risk getting it taken it away!

How do you adapt your beauty regime when you travel?

In terms of skincare, it really depends on where I’m going… The temperature of where I’m heading will really determine the type of moisturiser required to keep my skin looking and feeling hydrated.

What’s the best way to downsize your at-home beauty product haul for travel?

I pick out my make-up essentials from my day-to-day routine and organise them in my Power of Makeup Small Planner – I developed it many years ago to serve as a portable make-up vanity and it really helps me stay organised ahead of trips.

Do you prefer to pack travel minis or full-size beauty staples?

Neither. I usually fill reusable tubes with my staple products from home.

Do you have a regular plane beauty routine?

Before I do plane travel, I always exfoliate and hydrate and then use a serum and my Beauty Booster Serum. Travelling can really dry your skin, so it’s important to always add that extra step into your routine. I never travel in eye make-up on the plane and I’ll always wear lip balm.

How do you overcome jet-lag skin/eyes when you land?

Hydration! I always drink plenty of water before, during, and after a flight – no matter how short it is. If that doesn’t do it, I’ll pop a dry sheet mask on for 15 minutes.

What’s your favourite country to shop for home-grown beauty products?

Every country! I find that every culture has so many interesting takes on beauty. I love learning about the different routines and different lifestyles to achieve the same goal – confidence in our appearance.

What’s been your favourite vacation spa so far?

I absolutely love the spa in Villa Stéphanie in Baden-Baden.

What are your top make-up tips when travelling?

Stay organised. It will make your beauty and make-up routine so much easier on your vacation. Also, aim to clean your brushes before you go – it’s one less thing to do while you’re there!

What products are in your must-pack beauty kit right now?

Moisture is key – my absolute go-to product is my Beauty Booster Serum. I also love using Aquaphor for instant moisture for dry, cracked skin and lips when I’m travelling. Oribe Texturizing Spray is perfect for blow-dries on-the-go and I always pack a wide-tooth comb, because it’s less damaging than a brush. Jao Refresher works as a hand sanitiser, underarm refresher, you name it, it does it!

THE PACKING LOWDOWN

Travel light or over-packer?

Travel light.

Plane: mist or mask?

Mask – it ensures the maximum level of product absorption.

Spa facial or massage?

Facial.

Vacation air-dry or blow-dry?

I am a blow-dry girl through and through!

Skincare wipes, yay or nay?

Nay.

Faux tan or au naturel?

Faux tan – it is so important avoid any sun damage. You will thank me later!
