Down To A T: The Ultimate T-Shirts for 2020

Never underestimate the humble T-shirt. It may be dubbed a ‘basic’, but find a good tee that ticks all your boxes and it will be the future hero of your wardrobe.

A staple tee can be so many things – casual and effortless, structured and smart, or even a conversation piece thanks to a thought-provoking slogan. If you haven’t already found your T-shirt style, do it now and maximise on short sleeve season.

From iconic baggy band tees to high-neck baby blue numbers, there’s a T-shirt for everybody this summer. Here are our ultimate tees for 2020.

FOR THE MAXIMALIST

For vacation-ready tees, think ‘the bigger, the better’. Oversized fits are ideal for nonchalantly throwing over swimwear for beach lunches. Loewe Paula's Ibiza's oversized red, white and blue striped T-shirt nails the relaxed summer mood. Shaped with dropped shoulders and boxy sleeves the loose-fitting silhouette doubles up as an oversized T-shirt or tee dress. Minimalists, avoid… Featuring horizontal and vertical stripes, fringe-trimmed heart detail, and bold ‘Paula’s’ slogan, this tee is busy but beautiful.

FOR THE WANDERLUSTER

If you’re a regular to Citizen Femme, you’ll probably love vacations just as much as we do. Victoria, Victoria Beckham’s retro slogan tee speaks our language. In classic white cotton, the playful red motif says ‘I heart vacations, weekends and Fridays…’ Go for a relaxed fit to mirror the laidback sentiment of the slogan. One for the suitcase, it’s the first thing we’ll be wearing on our post-lockdown vacation with shorts, sunglasses and a margarita.

FOR THE MINIMALIST

Keep your T-shirt stripped back and neutral and you can tag-team it with just about anything in your wardrobe. True to the brand's signature, Acne Studio's Edie tee is all about uber-minimalist design. The tiny brand moniker stamped on the front will give any outfit a streetwear spin. We love it teamed with strict tailored shorts and chunky trainers for a major style juxtaposition.

“Keep your T-shirt stripped back and neutral and you can tag-team it with just about anything in your wardrobe.”

FOR THE ZOOLOGIST

Tiger King, eat your heart out. Think of animal prints like a neutral colour in terms of their T-shirt versatility. Cut for a boxy fit, Attico's leopard print tee is perfect for layering or wearing solo. The silhouette is equally as fierce as the animal print thanks to the subtle shoulder pads that instantly add structure. A classic crewneck style with a big cat twist, team it with matte buttery soft leather trousers or shorts to let the print roar.

FOR THE ACTIVIST

Let your basics do the talking with this call to action that’s oh-so now. Making its own political/racial/everything statement, Natasha Zinko’s strong slogan tee says it all: ‘Talk Less. Act More’. What this white cotton tee lacks in details (hello, minimalism), it makes up for in major attitude. Wear it loose, wear it tucked in, but don’t expect to wear it and not spark up a topical conversation once the pubs reopen.

FOR THE MELOMANIAC

Noun. Melomaniac – one with an abnormal fondness of music. If legends like David Bowie are music to your ears, check out MadeWorn’s band tees. Looking like it’s been lovingly worn to hundreds of gigs, this lived-in, subtly distressed print is a tribute to Bowie and his sold out 1978 American tour. Black band tees will give your outfit a cool girl edge. Tuck your T-shirt into smart tailoring and team with unexpected colours like muted pastels for an unexpected stylist twist.

FOR THE CONSERVATIVE

Yes, tees can be super-smart too. Step forward Albus Lumen’s refined baby blue T-shirt. Made from stretch jersey, the high, round neckline and longer-length short sleeves will make you look instantly put-together. Tuck it into crisp white trousers with simple sandals for a minimalist look complete with a shot of pastel colour. To go from day to night, bling up your baby blue with chunky gold earrings.
