Exploring Altona – a guide for the urban epicurean

Hamburg is a truly diverse metropolis and Altona, it’s most iconic district holds an excellent mix of offers when it comes to food and drinks.

If the focus of the first article on Altona was the 5 top things to do – just like a local – this article will guide you through some of Altona’s great food and drinks spots to enjoy in the outdoors.

1. Mornings at the farmer’s market

Green and sustainable living are big in Altona. The small farmer’s market located in the Spritzenplatz, a small square near the Altona train station offers locally produced cheese and meat, fresh fruits, vegetables, freshly pressed seabuckthorn and apple juices, as well as hand-made bread and buns. Basically everything you need for a picnic.

2. Picnic in the Donners Park

For a metropolis, Hamburg is a very green city. Outdoor lovers will enjoy spending time at the Alster lake, by the Elbe beach or in one of Hamburg’s neat parks. Right across from the Elbe river, Donners Park is one of Altona’s prettiest green spots and the perfect setting for a Hanseatic picnic session.

3. Eat fresh fish on the docks

A number of fish warehouses along the Elbe river offer fresh fish dishes for great prices. Grilled or baked fish, clams, lobster and fish buns are on the daily menu and the flavours are exceptional. The best of all the fish warehouses is the Atlantik Fisch Meeresspezialitäten. The deco, the atmosphere, and the fish are topnotch.

4. Guided brewery tour

Hamburg has a booming beer culture and a rapidly growing crafted beer scene. Ratsherren and Kuddel are just a couple of beer brands made in Hamburg, but, only Holsten beer comes straight from Altona. The brewery offers guided tours and outdoor beer tastings – what better way to have fun while learning about the art of brewing beer?

5. Evening cocktails

Liked by young creatives, elderly people, and foreigners, the district of Altona has a spirited and joyful vibe. In the evening, most bars are overcrowded, so that people tend to sip their drinks while sitting on the curbstone at the lively Alma-Wartenberg Square. Hate it or love it? We think you’ll love it.
