A Seat At The Bar: Tayer + Elementary, London

In our new column, A Seat At The Bar we showcase the world’s best bars – from plush cocktail spots to dive bars, and everything in-between.

This week, we’re spotlighting East London’s Tayer + Elementary.

The Lowdown

Tayēr + Elementary is owned by bartending experts Monica Berg and Alex Kratena, who collectively have received a blush-worthy number of awards for their skills over the years. Not only have the duo been heralded for their mixology mastery, but their bar has got quite the reputation too, ranking fourth in the 2020 World’s Best Bars list – particularly impressive considering it only opened in 2021.

Located just off Old Street roundabout, the bar is split into two halves: Elementary and Tayēr. Elementary, the front bar, which you first step into when entering the venue, serves up cocktails, both on tap and from the bottle. Tayēr, the second bar, is hidden behind a concrete partition. Here, you’ll find an open kitchen with patrons invited to enjoy front-row seats to the cocktail-making action at their large U-shaped bar.

What To Order

As sustainability is a large focus here, the menu at Tayēr + Elementary is regularly changing (based on what ingredients are available). Their cocktail list involves Alex and Monica’s unique twists on the classics, with current highlights including the Fig Leaf Whey Sour and the super refreshing Fragola Campari Soda.

Who To Bring

The setting, drinks, and food make Tayēr + Elementary the ideal spot for date night. Not only can you impress your date with some great tasting cocktails, but given that it’s a stone’s throw from Shoreditch, there are plenty of bars shouldering T + E that you can venture to for a nightcap, should you wish.

When To Go

Tayēr + Elementary is open from 3PM – 10PM Tuesday and Wednesday and until 1AM Thursday to Saturday. You can’t always guarantee a spot, as it’s walk-in only, and the bar does get more lively as the night goes on; we suggest you come early to avoid disappointment. We’d also recommend going on an empty stomach and pairing your cocktails with some of the tasty dishes on offer too, like their toothsome corn dog.

The Dress Code

Despite being a world class cocktail bar, the atmosphere at Tayēr + Elementary is very relaxed. Wear something chic and casual, to compliment the bar’s stripped-back interiors and mirror the neighbourhood’s style codes.

The CF Tip(ple)

Still haven’t perfected your at-home cocktail making skills after three lockdowns? Us neither. Thankfully, you can also enjoy the Tayēr + Elementary cocktails at home (no mixing – on your part – necessary). Buy a bottle or two of their pre-bottled drinks on the way out, stick them in the fridge and you’re good to go. Our personal favourites are the Bergamot Margarita and the Sandalwood Martini.
