The Art Of Natural Living At Petunia Ibiza

Overlooking the island’s iconic rock of Es Vedrà, you’ll find boutique hotel, Petunia Ibiza. This still somewhat-off-radar boutique hotel embodies the hushed, natural side of Ibiza.

No surprise when you learn that Es Vedrà is said to be one of the most magnetic places in the world. Whether true or not, there’s one thing everyone can agree on: Es Vedrà, and now Petunia, are the must-visit spots for a true Ibizan sunset.

Sat in the back of a taxi, we navigate our way to the western end of this idyllic island, heading in the opposite direction to many – away from the teeming streets of San Antonio.

Ibiza is famous for its party scene, but there are plenty more reasons to visit. Take Es Vedrà, the captivating 400-metre rocky island is considered a spiritual catalyst; a mythological masterpiece; a high-energy hotspot that draws in yogis from all corners of the globe. Petunia is one of the very few places that neighbours Es Vedrà, alongside the treasured Cala d’Hort nature reserve. Here, mother nature rules. It’s one of the reasons Petunia Ibiza is so special.

The Vibe

Bare-wood furnishings and terracotta tiles are woven with bold bougainvillaea flowers. The simplistic, earthy canvas of Petunia allows the beauty of the natural elements to speak for themselves, the view of Es Vedrà included but also the rich foliage that fills this quaint property.

The latest addition from the Beaumier portfolio, Petunia reflects the group’s mission to offer ‘special places, special moments’. Calming spaces that indulge in the luxurious, while absorbing the natural habitats of their locations. Petunia invites guests to discover a slower pace of life, in the most refined of manners. Soaking up the afternoon sun beside the pool at the centre of the hotel after a relaxed lunch, we glug glasses of icy sangria while a local musician serenades us on his acoustic guitar. This is the daily agenda at Petunia, encouraging guests to leave modern life behind and enjoy a barefoot existence.

The Rooms

Fourty-two rooms across eight categories allow the design details to speak for themselves. Intricate carved-wood bed frames, rattan blinds and woven rugs are wrapped in Petunia’s gorgeous garden. Opt for a room in the hotel’s newly renovated, south-facing Petunia Suites, not only for the benefit of a king-sized bed and private balcony, but also for views over the deep blue ocean and Es Vedrà.

Petunia’s romantic retreat – Es Vedrà Sea View Suite – is ideal for couples, while groups of four should choose the Dahlia Two Bedrooms Suite as a home-from-home.

The Food + Drink

Simple and honest is the ethos of dining at Petunia. The leading restaurant is La Mesa d’Es Vedrà, located in the very centre of the hotel and perfectly positioned to overlook the mythical island. Above this, step onto the La Mirada Rooftop, Petunia’s rooftop Crudo Bar, for fresh plates of ceviche and tartare paired with cooling cocktails.

Poolside you’ll find Los Olivos plating up Mediterranean favourites including large dishes of fresh tomatoes and soft burrata, tender octopus and green pesto gnocchi, and freshly-baked pizzas.

The Little Extras

In the colourful garden, nature is the name of the game. Connect with nature’s bounty during a session of garden or rooftop yoga, or via nature-inspired beauty treatments and organic therapies to ensure you feel as great as the hotel’s picture-perfect setting.

For a couple’s getaway, ask about the Romantic Package: available across any room category it includes champagne on arrival, fresh fruit, sunset drinks, a tasting menu for two and, importantly, an early check-in and a late check-out. The creative flair of various Ibizan artists is also welcomed here; live music performances take place at the hotel twice a week.

The To-Do List

The surrounding ocean here is as beautiful as the island itself. Discover it with SamBoat who connect visitors with local skippers. We hopped aboard HANUMAN – a 46ft yacht which took us cruising across the famously clear waters of Formentera, our brilliant skipper Baldo navigating us to the best bays and cosy coves.

Or, dive into the centre of the island at Finca La Plaza. A secret-garden style restaurant in the heart of Ibiza’s Santa Gertrudis. This effortlessly-cool dining spot fuses local ingredients with creativity and culture, and offers exceptional food and service in equal measure. We ordered tuna tartare, huge pink langoustines with truffle and a gorgeous, tender pulled-pork rib while taking in the chic, bohemian garden filled with fairy lights surrounded by cacti.

Elsewhere, close to the clubs but with a calming oceanfront setting, is Beachhouse – a popular all-day dining destination with both beach beds and a dedicated dining space. Ideal for lazy lunches and long dinners, dishes are inspired by Spanish culture. Our large table was filled with dishes of ham croquettes, rich slices of Iberian ham, salty anchovies and burrata balanced on fresh basil and tomatoes. All washed down with magnums of pale rosé. Claro está.
