A Seat At The Bar: Hound Bar At George Mayfair

In our column, A Seat At The Bar, we showcase the world’s best bars – from plush cocktail spots to dive bars, and everything in between. This month, we’re spotlighting Hound Bar at the newly-renovated George Mayfair.

An icon is reborn in the heart of Mayfair, as George Mayfair reopens after a seriously glossy, 18-month-long makeover. Spending an evening at its subterranean Hound Bar, Citizen Femme gets an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at one of London’s most renowned private member’s clubs.

The Lowdown

On the corner of Mount Street, the newly-renovated George Mayfair takes up double the space of its former guise. Enter via chic navy-blue doors flanked by two bronze alsatians: the venue, originally named after founder Mark Birley’s pet dog, George, is a love letter to our four-legged friends. Members are greeted by the club’s very own dog – named George of course – but the canine theme doesn’t end here.

Once past the bronze alsatians and through the blue doors, you’ll be immediately struck by the David Hockney that greets you. The artist’s iconic Afternoon Swimming print hangs in the entrance and initiates an almost mini David Hockney exhibition throughout. Restaurants in this locale seem to compete for best art collection, and George is a notable – and oh-so-worthy – addition.
To get to the Hound Bar you pass the upstairs bar (a space that seems ideal for a pre-dinner aperitivo) and follow a beautiful spiral staircase down to the lower floor. There’s a full-length portrait of a dachshund that flanks the entire height of the stairs as you descend.
The space itself reflects Art Deco design, with an antique brass bar, mahogany stools and cosy corners. We opted to sit at the bar and were looked after exceptionally by Head Mixologist, Santo Borzi. Deeming him the king of cocktails, he gave us a whistle-stop tour of the intriguing and fun menu.

What To Order

The Hound Bar’s drinks menu is a highlight and we loved perusing it, asking our mixologist, Santo, about all the intriguing and unique recipes behind the wonderful names, each in keeping with the canine theme.

Armed with all the information (and improving our canine trivia at the same time), we opted for: the Chihuahua Sour – Patron Silver tequila with lemon juice, kummel, sugar and egg white; the Scottish Terrier – Jonnie Walker black whiskey with Martini Ambrato and bitter; and the Chamucos Punch – Don Julio 1942 tequila mixed with vanilla, clove, cinnamon, lime juice and milk clarification. Another highlight is the signature George Martini, mixed with vodka not gin, and expertly shaken by Santo.
But it’s not all about the drinks. A stop at George Mayfair warrants making time for dinner rather than just bar snacks, though if you’re here for the latter try the Iberico ham and cheese toastie, the spicy tuna taco and the sticky pork bao bun. If you’re looking for something more substantial, ask about the Hound Dog or Crispy Buttermilk Chicken.

Who To Bring

This is a great place to bring a girlfriend and prop up the bar. It’s a wonderful space to enjoy as you spend some time watching both people and your cocktails being expertly-made.

When To Go

George Mayfair is open all week, but we suggest going towards the end of the week when it becomes more vibrant and lively. There’s also a large terrace around the circumference of the venue which would be ideal as a summer evening dinner spot.

The Dress Code

Professional-chic. We opted for a midi skirt and heels with an over the shoulder jacket. The dress code notes ‘relaxed yet refined’ and you’ll want to dress up to match the revamped venue.
