Hotel Hotel, one of Design Hotels’ newest members in Portugal is already causing quite a stir thanks to its innovative style and funky interior.
With collaborative pieces from the most lauded artists, illustrators and designers, all brought together by Lisbon hotelier Alexandre Martins, this boutique haven has its finger firmly on the design pulse.
The Vibe
Hotel Hotel is quietly tucked away on a side street, just a stone’s throw away from Lisbon’s bustling Avenida da Liberdade. Beyond the striking green and neon hotel façade, it’s quietly non-pretentious, and deceivingly bigger than expected. While it boasts an impressive collection of Portuguese art, one of its biggest draws is its jungle restaurant with an open-air courtyard and a picture-perfect pool inspired by the Botanical Garden of Lisbon.
The Rooms
Showcasing 40 rooms and four suites designed by Lisbon studio Pedrita, guests can expect warm, earthy tones of aubergine, sage and pale blue, with custom-made beds adorned with brightly decorated wool blankets. Terrace rooms boast a private outdoor area, perfect for enjoying welcome treats and wine, although sometimes it’s the small things you miss the most. Couples, be warned, you’ll have to fight over the solo bedside table.
Bijou bathrooms are well-designed with white marble and brass finishes, filled with organic bath amenities by Portuguese brand 8950 cosmetics. While there’s smart TVs and Bluetooth speakers, it’s missing a trick not offering streaming services as part of the in-room entertainment, but whispers are things may soon change.
That aside, there’s plenty to keep guests entertained, such as the unique artworks curated by the uber-trendy Underdog Gallery. With conversation starters on every floor, the friendly hotel team are great at giving insights behind the incredible works – including the giant elephant mural in the lobby – once guests are given a traditional Portuguese welcome with a glass of Port.
The Food + Drink
Animal Restaurant is a feast for the eyes, before the food even arrives. Hiding a secret jungle for al fresco dining, it serves a wonderful buffet breakfast with classics such as croissants, smoked salmon, antipasti, and cheeses, plus staples such as yoghurt, fruits, and cereal. Hot dishes include eggs any style and American pancakes. A decadent touch is the champagne available alongside the fresh juices, to start the day in style. The sleek and sexy bar adjacent to the restaurant is open daily from noon to midnight, with live DJs on the weekend.
The Little Extras
With a spacious yoga studio in the basement, guests can book a wellness experience or, for those feeling more adventurous, there’s also a tattoo studio! The outdoor swimming pool with its inky black tiles is surrounded by lush greenery and looks straight out of White Lotus – perfect for posing for Insta-worthy shots with a cocktail in hand.
Eco-initiatives include LED lighting, recycled toilet paper and reduced use of plastic packaging. Finally, check out is at 12 noon – a bonus for those with a penchant for lie ins.
The To-Do List
The buzzy Avenida da Liberdade is a gentle stroll around the corner and brimming with the capital’s best boutiques, restaurants, and cafes with outdoor tables that are perfect for people watching. A 20-minute walk takes you down to the coast and Lisbon’s magnificent plaza, Praça do Comércio. That aside, potter around Lisbon’s cobbled streets admiring the stunning architecture and enjoying warm, flaky pastéis de nata in the sunshine.
