The Beauty Haul Diaries: Tata Harper

It’s little wonder Tata Harper is dubbed ‘The Queen of Green’ in planet beauty. With cult products that are 100% natural and non-toxic, Tata founded her namesake skincare line in 2010 before clean beauty was even a thing…

Crafted from the ground up at her farm in Vermont, it’s luxury skincare that’s big on suitability with zero outsourcing or synthetics.

“Ever since we first launched, sustainability has been part of every practice that we do,” Tata tells us. “Today it’s not good enough to just create great products, it’s about designing great processes, too.”

Take Tata Harper Skincare’s most recent launch, the Supernaturals 2.0 collection – three years in the making, the revamped line sees boosted (but oh-so-clean) formulations that now come in chic but sustainable glass vessels.

We talk sustainability and travel beauty hacks with Tata. For this green skin guru, “consistency is key”, along with some can’t-live-without beauty tools… Clue: we now really want a crystal face massager.

How is sustainability part of your brand?

We’ve created our own facilities so we can make everything ourselves at our farm in Vermont – there’s no sub-contracting. Our packaging is always glass because it’s infinitely more recyclable than plastics. Sure, it’s an investment but as beauty producers, we need to be responsible.

What changes would you like to see with sustainability and beauty in the future?

Making refillables more accessible – not only the beauty industry, but house cleaning products, food… Good, glass packaging can last for years so if you find a way to be more circular and reuse, then I think that’s really the way to go. If clients can reuse beauty products, that a really awesome thing and it’s doable for a lot of companies to look into.

What are your must-do beauty rituals or treatments before you travel?

I travel quite a lot so I love aromatherapy rituals on the way to the airport – I just put them on my hand and inhale deeply. Grapefruit and peppermint are great if I’m taking a late flight and need to be energised when I arrive. I also love mixing geranium, rose and chamomile to ease anxiety and take the stress out of flying.

How do you adapt your beauty regime when you travel?

I don’t! I’m a big fan of consistency and I feel like that’s really important in beauty – so not having things that you only do at the weekend or on vacation, unless it’s a mask or something.

What’s the best way to downsize your at-home beauty product haul for travel?

For me, I stick to a specific skincare regime that’s all about layering and I do it no matter where I am.

Do you prefer to pack travel minis or full-size beauty staples?

I travel with minis of my regular products, like our cleansers and Hydrating Floral Essence, but in general, I pack my usual full-size beauty kit.

Do you have a regular plane beauty routine?

Yes, I have a little kit. I always travel with a silk mask from Slip, I wrap myself in my black poncho from Naadam, and put on some cashmere socks. Before take off, I spritz, actually saturate, my skin with the Hydrating Floral Essence and then I top it with the Retinoic Nutrient Face Oil and let it sink in.

How do you overcome jet-lag skin/eyes when you land?

I love doing Japanese eye massages to combat puffiness. I apply a rich eye product or balm and then use slow, circular motions with fingertips to help drain the eye area – it really helps.

What’s your favourite country to shop for home-grown beauty products?

Definitely France – I think it has really interesting and quality beauty products. I particularly love Christophe Robin haircare and Kure Bazaar for nails.

What’s been your favourite vacation spa so far?

The Spa at Blackberry Farm, Tennessee. It’s a real working farm and they have this amazing spa where they incorporate a lot of herbs from their gardens. It feels really homely and comfortable and the treatments are long for people that really want to indulge. It’s one that I always look forward to going to.

What’s your top beauty tip when travelling?

Stay hydrated during your plane ride. Keep your eyes really well moisturised because they often tend to dry out quicker.
