Spa of the Month: Sulha Spa at Kudadoo Maldives Private Island

Set on a remote palm-fringed island in the Indian Ocean, Kudadoo has redefined the meaning of an all-inclusive getaway. Ditch surprise costs and supplementary extras and settle into Anything. Anytime. Anywhere. At Kudadoo even the spa treatments are unlimited.

With just 15 ocean residences – each with a personal butler – Kudadoo is the crème-de-la-crème of exclusive resorts in the Maldives. A steady stream of high-profile guests have all crossed Kudadoo’s powdery shores, each in search of spectacular sunsets, unlimited activities and the most precious commodity of all… privacy. The entire island is also 100% solar-powered, earning it a great big sustainability tick.

Kudadoo’s Sulha Spa boasts treatment rooms which overlook the ocean, the gentle waves featuring as your live orchestra. The holistic menu is tailored to soothe both body and mind and includes chakra balancing meditations and invigorating full body massages.

Endless spa treatments on an eco-friendly private island…we checked-in to find out more.

SHOP THE ESSENTIALS

The Lowdown

All experiences at Kudadoo (including spa bookings) are organised by your butler – who’s available 24-hours a day – giving you the freedom to do what you want, when you want. Yoga after breakfast, a lengthy afternoon facial, perhaps a relaxing massage before bed – the choice is yours and it’s all included in your room rate.

Ahead of your arrival, a tailored itinerary is prepared based on your preferences, which ensures you make the most of your time on the island. It’s more of a gentle nudge than a timetable though, and things can be moved around as often as you like.

During our stay, we enjoyed sunrise yoga, jet-skiing, snorkelling, and a cheese and wine tasting with Ilyas, Kudadoo’s convivial sommelier. Daily rituals included champagne at sunset and trips to the spa – a trip here really is paradise

At the Sulha Spa, you’ll find two double treatments rooms, each with a private sundeck and outdoor bath for bubbly dips overlooking the ocean. In keeping with the “Anything. Anytime. Anywhere” mantra, spa treatments can also be booked in your residence, or on the beach.

The spa features the Maldives first Himalayan salt room, plus a sauna and a steam room. There’s also a huge infinity pool, though it’s rarely used as all guests have a 473 square feet private plunge pool in their residence.

THE VIBE

The vibe here is ultra-luxe with a focus on sophisticated design. You’ll find the Sulha Spa on the top floor of The Retreat, a stunning piece of architecture which also houses the restaurant and bar. Designed by Tokyo architect Yuji Yamazaki (who also managed the design of the residences), The Retreat combines the very best of Japanese inspired architecture, with a focus on sustainability – the buildings sloping roof incorporates over 900 solar panels.

The overwater building feels modern yet serene, thanks to sleek dark wood, high ceilings and an open-plan design which allows a cool breeze to circulate night and day.

All trips to the Sulha Spa begin with a refreshing flannel to soothe sun-baked brows, a soothing tea served alongside gives you time to admire The Retreat’s impressive thatched style roof. Your therapist will lead the way, but first, set the tone for your treatment by choosing an inscribed pebble – mine said ‘peace’ a fitting description as to how I felt my entire stay.

THE SIGNATURE

The 120-minute Lonu Immersion, a Sulha Spa signature treatment, combines 25 minutes in the salt chamber (which boasts 1,000-year-old Himalayan salt thought to have respiratory benefits), a tropical bath with an ocean view, and a massage of your choice.

THE EXTRAS

After dinner one evening we returned to our residence to find a warm bubbly bath waiting for us, the soapy suds adorned with fresh flowers. Our butler, Kaushar, had kindly prepared it ready for our return – it’s these thoughtful gestures which elevate Kudadoo from good to truly outstanding when it comes to guest service. Kaushar even helped us into our residence at 12am after our key card plunged into the ocean.

CF SPA TIP

Treatment rooms have giant floor-to-ceiling windows which open onto a private ocean-facing terrace. On arrival, ask your therapist to open the doors and allow the breeze, and gentle sounds of the waves to lull you into a deep relaxation. After a particularly wonderful facial one evening, I even spotted a turtle bobbing around in the glassy shallows outside.

THE BEAUTY KIT

All treatments at the Sulha Spa use products from Healing Earth, a South African brand which is 100% natural and organic. The extensive selection of in-residence beauty products are also by Healing Earth, and include sunscreen, after-sun, insect repellent, facial toner, mouth wash, the list goes on. Save on luggage space and leave your toiletries at home.
