Suitcase Series: Hunter Bell

Meet Hunter Bell, the New York-based womenswear label that’s sure to become your new dress obsession.

Hunter Bell studied fashion design at the University of Alabama, interning over the summer breaks in New York, the city where she would later further her design education at Parsons New School. Launching in 2006, her eponymous labels offers a confection of playful yet sophisticated throw-on dresses from vintage-inspired prairie smocks for summer in the city to joyful maximalist prints that will slot seamlessly into your vacation wardrobe.

Here, we delve into Hunter Bell’s suitcase psyche for a dose of sartorial escapism.

What is the first trip you remember taking?

New York – and clearly that shaped my life!

What’s your most memorable trip and why?

Greece. It had great food, culture, and inspiration. It was my last trip before the pandemic.

Where or what is your escape?

Playing tennis.

What is your favourite hotel?

I was supposed to go to Italy for my 40th in 2021 to stay at Le Sirenuse in Positano. It’s still on my bucket list!

What’s your idea of a luxury holiday?

To me, a luxury holiday means everything has been thought out for me ahead of time, leaving little room for error or last-minute chaos. Lots of pampering is also involved.

Where do you get your holiday inspiration?

Things like the decor and architecture of hotels feed my inspiration when I travel, so I try to explore new places that I’ve seen online or heard of from friends.

How do you switch off?

Well, it’s easier said than done, but putting my phone away and clearing my mind are the fastest ways for me to switch off and decompress!

What is your ultimate bucket-list destination?

South Africa.

If you could be sat next to one person – dead or alive – on a plane who would it be?

Gary Vaynerchuck because he is filled with knowledge on business ownership and everything happening in the digital world. He wrote a great book, The Thank You Economy, and I would love to pick his brain. Audrey Hepburn also comes to mind; in her post-Hollywood life when she started focusing on philanthropy.

What’s on your travel playlist?

Fruit Bats.

What is your jet-lag recovery tip?

The quality of your sleep matters. My husband and I try to take turns sleeping in after long trips. One of us can take the kids out, so the other has a better chance of more restful sleep!

Who is your favourite travel companion?

My husband Paul. But a girls trips with friends is a close second.

What is your suitcase stalwart?

Cardigans and layers.

What is your number one packing tip?

Always wear your largest pair of shoes so you save room in your suitcase.

What is your most-treasured purchase from your travels?

I love shopping for vintage clothes when I travel. Once when I was in Palm Springs I found this great rattan bag that I still use today with my summer wardrobe.

Where is home and what are your must-do’s for any tourists visiting?

Home is Houston. Depending on the time of year, I recommend flying into Houston and driving to Round Top, Texas for the Round Top Antique Show. In Houston I recommend the Museum of Fine Arts and The Menil Collection.

A cashmere throw.
