Suitcase Series: Rebecca Vallance

Rebecca Vallance’s recognisably elegant and ultra-feminine designs are a hit amongst A-listers from Eva Longoria to Sienna Miller, but it’s the Australian fashion designer’s wearable glamour that’s gained her such a strong fashion following.

With collections that span resortwear to bridal wear, and with stockists worldwide, it’s no surprise that Australia’s leading airline, Qantas, enlisted her to create their business class pyjamas and amenity kit for their new flight route from Sydney to New York.

Here, we delve into Rebecca’s travel psyche including her favourite resorts, her pre-flight skin prep and her ideal flight companion.

What is the first trip you remember taking?

A family holiday to Queensland, Australia when I was a little girl.

What’s been your most memorable trip and why?

It was with my husband’s family when I first moved to live in Europe. We went to Turks and Caicos in the Caribbean and stayed at Amanyara. It’s such a beautiful place.

What’s the biggest lesson you’ve taken from your travels?

Be extremely well planned, especially when travelling with children.

Where or what is your escape?

I can’t get enough of Kokomo Island in Fiji. We have been so many times as a family and I’m always re-booking again – before we even leave. It is truly a very special place. I also love to ski in Courcheval. There is something about skiing here; I find it so relaxing and fun – and I love the idea of everyone being able to ski on one mountain together before meeting for lunch.

If you could go anywhere tomorrow it would be…

Capri for lunch with my husband, family and friends. We had my husband’s 40th birthday party in Capri, and to this day it is one of our happiest memories.

How would you spend your ideal afternoon in your home city?

On Sydney Harbour in the sunshine.

What’s your idea of a luxury holiday?

First class flights, beautiful accommodation, time to spare, clean food and in general making happy memories.

Where do you get your holiday inspiration?

I love travelling so I’m always reading and researching about new places.

If you could sit next to anyone – dead or alive – on a long-haul flight, who would it be?

Michelle Obama, I find her fascinating. I love her intelligence, warmth as a person and optimistic outlook on life.

How do you recover from jet lag?

When I land I always make sure my schedule is jam packed so that I’m too busy to notice how jet lagged I actually am. If I’m home in Sydney I love to go for a swim in the sea.

What’s your in-flight beauty routine?

If leaving from Sydney, I stop into La Prairie’s facial spa at the airport and have a caviar facial before hopping on the plane. If I don’t have time for a facial, I smother myself in La Prairie regardless.

Your flight’s delayed an hour and your phone’s out of battery. How do you pass the time?

I’ll find a place to have a margarita and people watch.

Favourite hotel?

The Ritz Carlton in NoMad New York is really special. Same with the Mandarin Oriental in London. I stay at these two hotels regularly and they both feel like my home away from home. Crown Sydney and Crown Melbourne are my favourite hotels in Australia.

Favourite airline?

Qantas. I recently designed their pjs but they have always been my favourite airline – even previous to this – due to their safety record, the wonderful staff that work on board, and their beautiful interiors.

What’s on your travel playlist?

Beyonce’s Texas Hold ‘Em.

Where next?

Cannes and London in May, followed by New York in June and then Italy in July. It’s going to be a really busy year on the travel front.

FIRST THING THAT COMES TO YOUR MIND…

Hand-luggage essential?

Passport, phone charger and my Rebecca Vallance cashmere jumper.

Packing: roll or fold?

Both.

Inflight book or inflight film?

Neither, instead I sleep! I fly long haul a lot.

Music or podcasts?

Both, it depends what mood I’m in.

Time killer on a long-haul flight?

Responding to all emails in my inbox, sleeping, or watching a movie.

Holiday tipple of choice?

Always a Tommy’s Margarita.

Bucket list top destination?

St Barths.

Beach or City?

The beach – because I’m always in a city for work.

An ultimate holiday treat?

Quality time with my husband and family overseas.
