Suitcase Series: Pip Durell Of With Nothing Underneath

Former Vogue stylist and Tatler editor, Pip Durell started her label, With Nothing Underneath, to create the perfect shirt after finding herself adjusting men’s tailoring for her own use.

This London-based brand prides itself on standing the test of time, thanks to its wardrobe essentials inspired by British heritage that boast pared-back and effortless style, alongside Pip’s foundation of industry knowledge and eye for detail.

Here, With Nothing Underneath founder, Pip, shares memorable moments from her travels including her favourite restaurant in Puglia, the family trip that turned into a tradition and her must-have packing essentials for a stylish summer.

What is the first trip you remember taking?

Skiing in Meribel. We started young and I loved it from the first time I tried it. My family aren’t a hot-holiday family so skiing was our annual treat. I now go with my husband and friends, and it’s always my favourite trip.

What’s been your most memorable trip and why?

I took some time out in New Zealand a few years ago and I am totally in love with the country. My godfather has a farm on the North Island and I helped them on it (though this is debatable depending on who you ask), as I took in the beauty of the landscape. It’s incredibly special.

Where or what is your escape?

Salcombe in Devon. It’s where my mum lives so packing up the car and getting down there for a weekend with the dog is a real treat.

What’s the biggest lesson you’ve taken from your travels?

The importance of a work-life balance. I try to switch off from reality and enjoy the place I’m in. Not only does it make the trip infinitely better, but it also means I come home rested, inspired and ready to get back to work.

If I could go anywhere tomorrow I’d go:

For a long pasta-filled lunch at Cibus a favourite restaurant in Ceglie Messapica, Puglia.

How would you spend your ideal afternoon in your home city?

In London it’s a lie-in, lunch at the Wolseley, a gallery and then home to dinner in the garden with friends.

What’s your idea of a luxury holiday?

A comfy bed, a beautiful view and good wine.

Where do you get your holiday inspiration?

A friend just went to Costa Rica so now that’s on the list.

If you could sit next to anyone on a flight – dead or alive – who would it be?

My husband because he shares his snacks and lets me rest my head on him to sleep!

How do you recover from jet lag?

I’m a real believer that you just have to mentally adjust: set your watch to the time zone of your destination as soon as you get on the plane. That’s it.

What’s your in-flight beauty routine?

Moisturise at all costs! And also pack chewing gum.

Your flight’s delayed an hour and your phone’s out of battery. How do you pass the time?

We always travel with our roll-up backgammon, so a game of that.

Favourite hotel?

The Bequia Beach Hotel – I’ve just spent the dreamiest week there. It’s the perfect mix of polished without compromising the character of the location.
