When you think of the Swiss mountains, images of snow-capped peaks probably appear. But with global temperatures shifting and shortening Europe’s snowy season, Grand Hotel Kronenhof in Pontresina is fast emerging as a go-to wellness destination in the region’s off-season.
From heart-raising hikes in Switzerland’s spectacular natural forests, to a spa with floor-to-ceiling views of the surrounding landscape, this hotel and spa harnesses the benefits of fresh mountain air, traditional grand dining and a full fleet of wellness classes and therapies to help you rest and recharge in style this summer and autumn.
This is why you should plan a trip to the Swiss mountains even when there isn’t snow, especially if you can check into Grand Hotel Kronenhof.
THE LOWDOWN
A true ‘Grand Dame’ hotel, the Grand Hotel Kronenhof has reigned from its hilly perch over the Engadin region of Switzerland for 175 years. Located just six kilometres from St Moritz, it’s long been a luxurious paradise for adventure and luxury-seekers alike, and, with over 240 kilometres of cross-country skiing trails and 88 slopes nearby, the winter season brings a buzzing atmosphere to a hotel that still holds all its classical charm and grandeur.
Yet, throughout its long history the hotel has also seen a lot of change – not least multiple seasons across Europe where snow is not necessarily as thick and as regular on the ground. Historical as it may be, Kronenhof has blossomed rather than faltered at such uncertain winter prospects. Making use of every inch of its panoramic valley views that stretch as far as the eye can see, it’s increasingly captivating visitors in the summer and autumn too, especially due to its truly breathtaking spa and pool, plus traditional dining and plenty to do within its spectacular surrounding landscape.
THE SPA
Pictures of the panoramic view you get from the wide, inviting swimming pool – the statement feature of the spa – really don’t do the space justice. Whether you are undertaking some calm, leisurely lengths, curling up on one of the loungers, or taking prime position in the incredibly large Jacuzzi-jet pool, you can’t help but look out to the mountains, feeling your stresses slowly melt away. The opportunity to take in the view at sunrise and sunset should not be missed. In fact, make sure you keep your phone on you ready to snap the ultimate photo for your travel memories.
The spa space is also deceptively sprawling. There are multiple saunas and steam rooms hidden away for male-only, female-only and mixed experiences (it’s a no swimsuit zone), plus a dreamy flotation room where you can just lay back and be cradled by the warm water after trying out the hot and cold plunge walkways. There’s even a small children’s paddling area with gently jet-powered fountains to keep little ones entertained, so there’s something for the whole family to enjoy.
On the floor above are the treatment rooms themselves; each a little alcove of calm with floor-to-ceiling views out to the rolling forests below, making them atmospheric regardless of the weather outside. The signature treatment here is the personalised massage, where your therapist guides you to choose relaxation-boosted aromatherapy oils based on how they make you feel, and CBD oil is also on hand to calm and soothe a stressed out nervous system. Swedish massage is of course a popular choice with its soothing pressure and rhythmic strokes, but everything is tailored to you and your needs, meaning you’ll walk out to the relaxation area for a cup of hot fruit tea feeling like you are floating on a cloud.
THE WELLBEING OFFERING
Hiking, yoga and mountain biking – there’s so much to do around Pontresina that we promise you won’t even need to consider skis at all. At the hotel itself, there’s a small but well-stocked gym, a yoga and pilates studio and three very unique outdoor decked platforms to let you practice while feeling truly on top of the world. Instructors are on hand, leading you in sessions to energise your body for the day and give you a really thorough workout in the process.
However, stroll a little further from the hotel and you’re in for the biggest treats. Designed to help you bathe in the healing benefits of nature, hotel staff can guide you on the hour-long hike to Leo da Staz – a hidden lake in the middle of the forest. A not-to-be-missed opportunity, the route is flat enough for beginners and is well worth it for the unforgettable views. You’ll also have the chance to walk the famous path of the ibex mountain goat: a true highlight of the spring and autumn season, you may catch a glimpse of the majestic creatures as they make their way down to the fields near Pontrensia village.
THE DINING
Food is truly an occasion at Grand Hotel Kronenhof (which is why dinner jackets are required for men in the truly picture-perfect Grand Restaurant in the evening). On the menu you can expect seasonal food, including fresh fish and meat, delivered with true five star service and local fine wines to match. Just save room for the classic cheese trolley, which rolls around filled to the brim with artisan delights and classic Swiss favourites. Even the buffet breakfast – which puts on quite a spread – is elevated by being on offer in this traditional restaurant space. Newspapers are offered at the door, and staff slide up seemingly from nowhere to keep your morning caffeine hit unfailingly topped up.
There’s also the gourmet dining experience offered at the intimate Kronenstübli, a Swiss pine parlour where highlights of Italian-Mediterranean and French cooking include a signature duck dish that crosses over into fascinating dinner theatre. You can also enjoy a full, leisurely afternoon tea in the legendary Kronenhof Bar and Lounge (once again, just drink in that view), or dip into Swiss fondue and Raclette – you are in Switzerland after all.
Al fresco dining is also highly recommended during the months where the weather is good. Le Pavillon – which overlooks the iconic ice rink in the winter – offers light bites during the warmer months, including traditional rosti to give you all the energy you need for the activities of your day ahead. Or, you can just enjoy the uninterrupted site of the Val Roses glaciers while reclining on an outdoor lounger, a glass of sparkling Moët Ice Champagne in hand. It’s your blissful decision to make.
THE ROOMS
The 112 rooms and suites are a real testament to the classic elegance of a true heritage hotel, with the additional benefit of a recent refurbishment by French furniture designer, Pierre-Yves Rochon. The partnership has brought some refreshed colours and more light to the furnishings, ensuring modern touches keep the hotel in line with the needs of the luxury traveller of today. That said the rooms are equally designed to entice you outdoors – once again they make the most of all possible views – and you’ll wake up feeling ready-to-go after a sleep in the soft, enveloping beds. If you are lucky you may even secure a room with a balcony, and, if you do, we’d recommend ordering a room service breakfast complete with warm pastries and coffee to enjoy. Spending an hour or two just drinking in the splendour of the hotel and town around you has noticeable wellness benefits in itself.
THE LITTLE EXTRAS
With a history as long as Kronenhof’s, there’s charm and character around every corner of the hotel if you stop to discover it. That includes beautifully-decorated smoker’s lounges that transport you back half a century, live piano music from the main lobby in the evening, and a hidden cellar bar where wine tastings can also take place. The finishing flourish is the tucked away traditional bowling alley where you can try your hand at getting a strike alongside cocktails and nibbles.
