Suitcase Series

Suitcase Series: Jaynee Penny of TRIANGL

Australian-born swimwear brand, TRIANGL, has amassed a loyal following since its launch in 2012 – you just have to look at their impressive Instagram following to know it’s a label worth coveting.

Known for their bold and colourful prints plus innovative fabrics, their distinguishable style is a celebrity favourite, worn by Hailey Bieber and Beyonce.

Coinciding with their latest collection drop, we speak to Creative Director and jet-setter Jaynee Penny about her travels including the time she got engaged during a mountain trek, how she spends a perfect afternoon in her hometown of Bondi Beach, and the time she spent on a luxury super yacht in Malta.

What is the first trip you remember taking?

I think I remember this one for all the wrong reasons! We went on a family trip to the snow in Australia. I am naturally very clumsy (my nickname is Bambi), so I spent the majority of my first snow trip face-planting. The trip ended with me falling through an ice lake and being saved by a relative. Safe to say, that was the first and last time I’ve been to the snow.

What’s been your most memorable trip and why?

Besides my trip to the ice lake, my most memorable trip is to the Greek island of Hydra in 2018. It’s where I complained to my boyfriend about making my trek up a mountain in 30+ degree heat in the most uncomfortable shoes. Despite all the complaints, he still got down on one knee and became my fiancé. We celebrated by walking to a beach club which had a view of the mountain we were meant to walk up (and where he was meant to propose).

Where or what is your escape?

My escape is spending time with my parents in my family home. Nothing beats having your parents fuss over you for a day – I say ‘day’ as any longer and the novelty wears off. (I know they will both be reading this, sorry mum and dad!)

What’s the biggest lesson you’ve taken from your travels?

The lesson I need to learn but am yet to master, is packing light. I recently did my first ever trip with hand-luggage only. It was very liberating until I went shopping and became the ‘bag lady’ on my return flight.

If I could go anywhere tomorrow I’d go to:
Wherever DJ Fisher is playing. Which is often Ibiza: a win-win for me as Ibiza is the best place in the world.

How would you spend your ideal afternoon in your home city?

Home is Bondi Beach in Sydney. My ideal afternoon is dictated by the wind direction. It’s either a long afternoon beach session at Harbour Beach or Bondi Beach, followed by a fish burger from our local fish ‘n’ chip shop.

What’s your idea of a luxury holiday?

Spending a week or more in one location, being able to unpack my suitcase and have time to do laundry. I also didn’t know how luxurious it was to stay on a superyacht until recently when we stayed on Galaxy while visiting Malta for a festival. With a push of a button (literally), we would have whatever we needed – which was super helpful considering we lost our luggage. So besides being able to do laundry – having a button that is the gateway to food, snacks, socks, and whatever else I may need is my idea of a luxury holiday.

Where do you get your holiday inspiration?

Most of my travel revolves around work, holidays are planned around these commitments. Together with being married to and friends with international DJs – most holidays involve being on a TRIANGL or DJ tour which are both brilliant (and tiring) ways to see the world.

If you could sit next to anyone – dead or alive – who would it be?

My original answer was my husband Richy but after 72 hours in Paris with him, I may need to re-think this!

How do you recover from jet lag?

I don’t. It’s a waiting game for me. Sometimes I am perfectly fine and think I’ve beaten it, and then I spend the next week up from 1AM – 6AM meal prepping in the kitchen. I do find ocean swims and saunas help relieve the tiredness.

What’s your in-flight beauty routine?

Drink a lot of water.

Your flight’s delayed an hour and your phone’s out of battery. How do you pass the time?

This is a tough one to answer as you’ll never find me without my phone charger at an airport. But let’s say the airport has lost power; you’d find me pacing the airport, getting my step count in.

Favourite hotel?

We shot a TRIANGL campaign in Cuixmala, Mexico, which was pretty special. The interiors, the wildlife, the food, the pools, the service – every box was ticked.

Favourite airline?

Am I allowed to say they are all equally as unreliable as each other?! I’ve had both good and bad experiences with most airlines. A special shout out to Air France for serving croissants and baguettes on their flights though.

What’s on your travel playlist?

My two go-to podcasts are The Joe Rogan Experience and Darling Shine by Chloe Fisher and Ellidy Pullin. Chalk and cheese but both are entertaining for different reasons.

What are your must-have travel picks?

TRIANGL VINCA bikini in Ebony Black – the most worn item in my suitcase. Tatcha Dewy Skin face cream. My Adidas x Gucci gazelles. Anything Alice McCall (usually a skirt and jacket combo). A pair of fun sunglasses. Ksubi denim shorts.

Where next?

I’m currently on location in the Greek islands for our next TRIANGL campaigns, and then will head to Ibiza.

FIRST THING THAT COMES TO YOUR MIND…

Hand-luggage essential? Universal travel adaptor (see, my phone is never out of battery).

Packing: roll or fold? Roll.

Inflight book or inflight film? Book.

Music or podcasts? Podcasts.

Time killer on a long-haul flight? Work, sleep and stare straight ahead.

Holiday tipple of choice? Still water – very boring.

Bucket list top destination? African safari.

Best shopping gem found abroad? Vintage bridesmaid and wedding dresses.

Beach or City? Beach.

Ultimate holiday treat? A bread basket (although can you call it a treat if you have it every night?)
